Autumn craft: scarecrow on a stick and CL homelearning

It’s the beautiful season of fall now, we wanted to make something related to Autumn and since the boy suggested making a scarecrow craft, that’s what we made – Scarecrow on a Stick! 😉

Materials Used:
Craft stick
Glue
Scissors
Assorted color construction papers

You can probably tell that the scarecrow on the left is created by the boy, the right is by me.

I love that his scarecrow has so much details and is so full of life! So unlike mine… neat and boring!!
Instead of drawing the eyes on the scarecrow like i did, he cut out tiny triangles eyes and stuck them on the face. He found a paper apple cutout from the pile of scraps that we have and transformed it into a pumpkin. Then he added some strips of brown “hays” because according to him, pumpkin and scarecrow cannot go without hay! HAHA. :)

After the craft, we did some Chinese learning. We talked about the season of fall (秋天) and learned the colors (红, 紫, 黄, 橙, 绿, 褐) of the foliage in Chinese.

After he was done with his coloring, the boy wanted to do a number work,so I gave him a copy of Chinese version of connecting the dots. Because he already know the chinese characters of #1-5, he was able to do this work without any help. (Thanks, Denise! We love your materials! Save me so much time in preparing them myself! 😉 )

#6-10 is a work in progress. I will update again when we complete the lesson. :)

Oops… It has been a long while since I updated about the boy’s Chinese learning progress. I guess i better start updating them again.

Not sure if it is a boy’s thing, the boy is still not showing any interest in learning the Chinese language. Initially, it wasn’t my plan to start teaching the boy to recognize Chinese characters so early. But after exhausting all the possible methods that I can think of to get him to speak more Chinese to me, I decided to go the “boring” route – i.e. force feed him with Chinese characters! We are progressing very slowly but it seems to work a little better.

For the human parts characters (口, 头, 牙, 手, 人), I worked with him to make a set of 识字卡. He drew the pictures, and I made the Chinese characters.

He was to use his pictures to match the Chinese characters when we do our revisions.

I’m happy to say that this method worked for these lessons.
By the end of the week, he was able to recognize all 5 characters. :)

Yesterday was the boy’s first Chinese homeschool lesson. I’m glad it went well. For our first lesson, I introduced him his first two Chinese characters “大” and “小”.

Preschool Chinese Homeschool Activities

I took out the box of plastic animals and told him to sort the animals according to their sizes i.e. “大” (big) or “小” (small). The boy was able to understand and complete the simple work with not much help. Once he got them correct, I would mix the plastic animals and the cards up. Then asked him to look at the cards again, then group them together according to the Chinese characters on the homemade word cards (using recycled DH’s old company name cards).

By the end of the 10mins work, the boy was able to recognize both characters. So, we can work on a new lesson next week.

Cabbage Boy

Queen

Queen

Puppets craft : Dora the explorer

Dora the explorer puppets
Materials used:
Recycled blue paper folder
Papers
Crepe papers (which we recycled from some old crafts! ;))
Craft sticks
glue sticks
Crayons
scissors
recycle colorful strips of construction papers

The boy loves books and one of his current favorite is “Dora in the Deep Sea” book, which we got from the library. Since DH is away for biz trip, I am forced have to take over the responsibility of reading to the kids in the morning & night. *roll eyes* Well, I don’t really mind reading to the kids, but I dread reading the same book over and over again. *Boring!* So, when the boy asked me to read the same book for the 3rd time, I decided to “spice” things up by changing some of the words to Chinese words so that he gets to learn some Chinese too. :)

These are the Chinese words that I introduced him today:
猪 Pig
猴子Monkey
é±¼ Fish
Fox

I guess he enjoyed the changes because I was asked to read the book again for another 5 more times. -_- Hmm… Actually, I shouldn’t be complaining, I should be happy because this is the first time that the boy is showing interest in learning Chinese. In the past, I tried to teach/speak to him in Chinese, he simply just not keen at all. But this morning he (obviously in very good mood) was repeating every Chinese words after me. :) It seems a waste if I don’t do something with him while he has the interest to learn, so I decided to make this puppet craft with the children to further motivate & engage the boy.

After completing the puppets & its background crafts with the kids, the girl read the book and we acted out some scenes together. The boy mostly just sat quietly to enjoy our puppet show. Whenever possible, we tried to involve him in the play by asking him some questions and to say the more popular lines like “Swiper, no swiping” and “Oh man!” etc. Then we finished it off with our own silly version of Dora’s “We did it” dance and song. It was really fun and I am happy that the boy is finally showing interest in doing craft with us and is getting better at following instructions during our structured play & learn session. :)

Singapore national pledge

The other day the girl asked me to say the Singapore national pledge in Chinese and I couldn’t. So, I quickly google and found the Chinese version on Wikipedia. I better start remembering it myself, in case she ask me again. 😛

We, the citizens of Singapore
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society,
based on justice and equality,
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
progress for our nation.

That also reminds me to start reading up on the American history, which I know nuts about it!! Argh…
It’s not easy to be a mom these days!!

the girl’s 1st school report card

Finally the lazy mom decided to stop procrastinating and post about the girl’s 2nd exam (Winter term) which she had on the eve of Chinese New Year. She scored a perfect 100 marks again. :)We are extremely proud of this little girl, who did so wonderfully well even though she is at least 1-2 years younger than her peers. :) Along with her exam papers came this 1st school report card.

I’m sure the grandparents wish to know what was written on the report card, here’s the translation:

“The girl is respectful to the teacher and also the classroom discipline. She is active in participating class activities and is diligent in completing her home assignments. Teacher hopes that The girl would continue with her good learning attitude and be more confident in answering/asking questions during class. She believes that The girl’s Chinese will improve continuously.”

:)
