the big sister-to-be

When we first knew of the pregnancy in early January, we wanted to wait till our first OB/GYN checkup before telling the little one. However, the morning sickness got worse before the appointment. I started throwing up, had serious heartburns that often brought me to tears and was staying on bed most of the time. Nikita saw how I was suffering, she started asking questions like “Mommy, are you ok?”, “mommy, will you die?” etc, so we knew we had to tell her and thank goodness, she was really happy and excited to hear the news.

Frankly speaking, Nikita is quite a good girl (minus those tantrum throwing sessions). Eversince she knows that she is going to be a big sister, she has been even more caring towards me than ever. She doesn’t ask me to carry her at now. (But still asks her daddy though. Haha.) She would come up to me and ask if I am ok whenever I am suffering from those morning sickness, especially when I’m gagging. She reminds me to take my prenatal vitamins daily (like her old man) and attends to me whenever I need helps like getting the Yu Yee Oil, Panadol etc – much more efficient than asking the man. Nowadays, before bedtime, she would kiss the baby (my belly) goodnight and if she is in the mood, she may even sing a few lullabies (favorites -Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars, Rock-a-bye baby) too!

Two nights ago, I saw her lying on a baby pillow. I told her that the pillow is too small for her now, she should use the big one. Guess what she said? She said, “Mommy, I know this pillow is for baby. I will share this pillow with Baby next time.” Aww… I think she will be a great big sister!

Oh… I better blog this down too before I forget.
Yesterday morning, she woke up and said to me,”妈妈, 我梦到妹妹! 我和她一起玩. 我很开心!” (Mommy, I dreamt of Baby Sister. I played with her and I am really happy.)
“妹妹是谁?” (Who is Meimei?
“妹妹就是宝宝啊!” (Meimei is Baby.)

Wah… if her dream comes true, that will be great!

who is bigger?

DH or me?

Hehee… ya, I’m joining the club! We are expecting a September baby! So exciting! Well… still late for the 1 September cutoff date for school admission though… but never mind la, as long as the baby is healthy! :)

I just went for my 2nd OB/GYN checkup yesterday. Everything is ok. We haven’t got a chance to peek at the baby yet since ultrasound routine only given at around week 18-20 (and another at around week 32) in the US. No weight gain so far (due to poor appetite), but obg nurse was not concerned. However, because I was a borderline gastastional diabetic case during my 1st pregnancy, they wanted me to do my Gluocose challenge test early by next week. Hopefully, I will be ok this time. *fingers crossed* Sigh… really dread drinking that extremely sweet “o-leng-ju”! -_-

So far, this pregnancy is really different from my first. Though I had morning sickness too when I was pregnant with Nikita, I have it far worst with this one. Nausea and vomiting, heartburn, excessive salivation (yucks!), exhaustion, frequent urination, headaches, increased sense of smell – (cannot smell food, cannot cook, cannot eat. :( ) and lower abdominal cramps. You name it, I have it. Even now when I’m into my 15weeks, I still have most of these symptoms! Ah… When is this going to end?

Because there are huge differences in the morning sickness when comparing both pregnancies, most people I talked to would “predict” that I’m going to have a boy. Though I prefer the baby to be a girl (better for Nikita), but deep down inside me I somehow feel that it is going to a boy. Oh well, no matter what the gender of the baby is, I know we are going to love him/her. We are just so blessed to have this baby.

how I am so going to be a naggy mom…

Every schooling morning, Nikita would have her breakfast at the sofa, while watching her favorite TV program “The Dragontales” and what follows is kind of routine for us…

“Nikita, you must eat your bread ah… if not, no TV for you.”
“Ok, mommy.”
And off I went to do my stuff, either cooking in the kitchen or reading emails/blogs at my computer.

2 mins later, I would come out and check on her. Usually what I saw was, the sandwich almost untouched from the last time I checked. So, I would “threaten” her supervise her a bit, to make sure she has at least 2 bites of the sandwich, before i return to do my things.

Another 2 mins later…
“Nikita, EAT YOUR BREAD!”
That’s me, shouting from either the kitchen or computer room, to remind the little one to eat her sandwich. -_-

If you understand programming languague, it’s kind of like a loop…

While (BREAD exist)
{ “Code” to execute while the condition is true, i.e.
Every 2 mins -> Mommy shouts -> Nikita eats;
Bread minus 1 mouthful.
}

The loop will keep repeating itself and stop only if the bread is non-existence (i.e. gone).

So you tell me… how many times do I have to remind her to eat that slice of bread? Then, multiply this number by 180 (for estimated number of school days per year; holidays and weekends excluded because I don’t care! :P ). The number is not big, but I’m not done yet. I’m sure this “routine” is not going to stop anytime soon. If I am lucky, maybe it will stop when she in elementary school, which is 3 years later. Bearing in mind, this is just one of the things I do to make sure my child is well taken care of. There are like 101 things (ok… I’m exaggerating here. :P ) that I have to “remind” her to do each day. And I’m just talking about 1 kid! So, if we have more, imagine how much “training” we will have!

As you know, habit is a pattern of behavior acquired through frequent repetition. Now I can totally understand why mothers are always perceived as the naggy one in the family. (Don’t deny it! You sometimes think that your mom is a nagger, even though her intentions are good, right? ) I’ve already started nagging at Nikita to eat her breakfast, I guess very soon I will be nagging at her to do her homework, make her own bed, clean her own mess etc… Wa lau eh! I think I’m turning into one already. -_-

Spring-Easter craft

I got this craft idea from a craft site, but lost the URL so I’m not able to provide the link here.

Anyway, it is a really fun project for the little one.

Materials you will need:
1. Paper plate x1 (with a semi circle cut out)
2. Cardboard/index paper for the rabbit. – Normal letter size paper may be too flimsy.
3. Green paint – for painting the paper paint green.
4. Markers for decorating the flowers, easter eggs etc
5. scotch tapes for taping the rabbit on the plate.

Since it is pretty self-explanatory, I will not go into detail on how to make it. :)

baby talk

CM: See, daddy’s tummy so big! Bigger than mommy’s.

DH: I got baby inside here. (pointing at his tummy.)

Nikita: I also have baby inside my tummy!

CM: You also got baby??

Nikita: My poo-poo is my babies! Everytime I go poo poo, my babies come out. :D

lesson : 石地

学习目标: 认读石和地

Activity 1:
I drew some pictures to demonstrate the meaning of the words and where they could be used. (For “地” 字, I just drew the things we could find on the ground “地”.) Nikita was to repeat the words to me after each picture was drawn. We then colored the pictures together. At this point, I don’t expect her to memorize the new words. I find my child learns best when not being forced.

Activity 2:

After a day or 2, I would start to revise the new words with Nikita on the whiteboard. I would incorporate the new words into simple sentences, and ask her to read them to me. If she can’t recognize the words on the whiteboard, I will ask her to find the pictures we did a few days ago and try to recall what the word is. Usually she will come back with the right answer and we will continue with the revision again. I find this a easy method to help her to recognize the words. And she gets to revise the other words that she has previously learnt too. :)

writing

Nikita has been bringing back her writing work from school since last December (06). It was through these works that I know she is ready for writing. I also noticed that she has started taking interest in writing her name and tracing the letters.

When Nikita asked me to write the letters of her name on a piece of paper for her to trace, I was so excited and happy to do it. But soon my excitement died away… Knowing how toddler loves repetitive work, she kept coming back to me to do the same old thing over and over again. Imagine the number of lines, dots and marking I had to do for the next couple of weeks. Argh… it bored me to hell! I had enough of it. So, I created a template with the letters of her name on it using Photoshop and Powerpoint, and had DH photocopied 20 pieces of it. Hehee… Peace at last! Yeah…

Now that Nikita recognizes and knows how to write her name, she loves to write her name on almost anything, from the whiteboard to her drawings… nothing is spared.

Her love for tracing words can even be seen on the Chinese work we did together!! (*faint*)

Since she loves writing so much, right? I simply can’t waste this golden opportunity to introduce her to the Chinese writing. So, I started teaching her some simple Chinese stroke sequences (i.e. 横, 竖, 撇, 捺) and had her traced the strokes on the Chinese exercise book!

Nikita concentrating on tracing ‘‘ on her exercise book. :)

Don’t worry that I will stress her too much. I know the consequences of forcing a young child to write. (Go read this Chinese article, you will know what I mean. ) So, I am going to take it slowly and let her take the lead when comes to writing.

specially for daddy…

My DH is on biz trip now…:(
Knowing how he misses his darling girl, these collages are specially made for him.

Nikita looking adorable wearing DH’s snow hat! :)

Nikita wearing my spectacles! Haha… Cute, right?
有没有比较像我了? ;)

pocahontas

Nikita’s recent favorite Disney movie is Pocahontas. Every time we watch that movie together, I can’t help but to notice how BIG Pocahontas?s breasts is. *giggles*

One day, while working on something at my computer, my silly little shouted out for me and this was what I saw…

She said, “Look! I’m Pocahontas! I have big neh neh!”
